Orissa State Volunteers and Social Workers Association

The association was founded and promoted by a group of eminent freedom fighters, social reformers and activists with the ideology of promoting volunteerism, grass root voluntary action and people-centred development with the twin concept of ‘Development through Participation’ and ‘Development through Sustainability’. OSVSWA, as a change agent and in the Social Change Process (through basic education / non-formal education, capacity building etc), has been consistently working since its inception with strict adherence to the principle and ideologies as thrust upon by the founders by initiating voluntary and social action based on Gandhian Philosophy of community development. 

 

The organization has been efficient in its ideology of dedication and commitment towards the underprivileged, marginalized and excluded sections of rural and tribal population and has been engaged in their empowerment through various social, economic, environmental, educational, infrastructural development, and planning and research programs. The organization has also been engaged with few burning social, economic, environmental and action for youth issues from time to time and active in related public policy advocacy and networking activities in association with various government, international and local partners. We are working for a better change of the youths through non-formal education / social education.

 

Vision : To meaningfully contribute as a federator and catalyst in the social change process towards a just, peaceful, empowered, functional, harmonious and sustainable human society. We are dedicatedly working to bring long lasting positive impacts on the livelihood and life of the underprivileged, women, children, youth – active citizenship and the isolated people in their all-round development. We work to bring an impactful change in the civil society through our technology driven research and innovation, and promote and activate volunteerism and voluntary action in all spheres of societal development. 

Challenges

Hygiene

  • Villages not equipped with contingency plan, safety and evacuation skills, and health and hygiene management during natural disasters,

Water

  • Limited access to nutritious food, safe water, sanitation and hygiene for everyone.

Environment 

  • Deforestation, decreasing number of primary humid forests which provide numerous global ecosystem services, which has a major impact on climate change.

Education

  • Youth unemployment in urban areas due to lack of formal vocational education, high school dropout rates, inadequate skill training, negative perception of skilling and lack of industry related skills,

Health

  • Community health problems such as malaria and diarrhoeal diseases which are causing deaths,

  • Female illiteracy, maternal mortality, lack of occupational security and health safeguards of female labouring in unorganised sectors,

Social

  • low wages and non-payment of wages, gender disparity in wages, forced sex work and trafficking, violence and exploitation of single women

  • High undernutrition, a high disease burden and inequalities between access to health services,
